The Collegiates - Color
Buena Vista Colorado, with the Collegiate Peaks in the background. It was great to finally get up to the mountains after being home from a long absence. It was a cloudy day, but one can still salvage some decent photos from days like this. I'm happy with how this turned out, after the initial out of camera images looking so flat. This is a 7 image stitch. Finally getting to play with my D3s a bit also. This is a remarkable camera, I am so fortunate to have it.
Apprehension
This is an image I took in Afghanistan several years ago. It was taken in poor lighting, with a camera that didn't have a very good sensor, but with a pretty long telephoto lens. I've been trying to make this look better for a long time, and I finally got it pretty acceptable I think. I was really captivated by her eyes, and the expression on her face which is still really about her eyes.
The story here is that I was trying to capture her, and like most girls, she was hiding her face. Girls aren't supposed to be seen by males outside the family (at a certain age, which she is probably approaching here). She finally got tired of my attempts I guess and walked some distance away. I saw her standing under the trees, zoomed out to 400, focused on infinity and grabbed a quick shot before she saw me. The cropping really took away a lot of pixels, which there weren't many to start with. Finally found a way to make it look presentable after a significant crop.
Although I would never make such a claim, someone once compared it to Steve McCurry's famous Afghan girl photo, so I call this my McCurry shot.
